Fifty-Third National Conference
CMS Pre-Conference Workshop:
Writing Successful Grant Proposals
September 22, 2010
Minneapolis, Minnesota
- Do you teach at a school which would like to receive external funds in support of special
programming?
- Do you teach at a school that would like the special recognition and validation of an external grant?
- Are you linked to a community music organization in search of external funds for operations or special
projects?
- Are you an entrepreneurial type, with plenty of ideas but no funding to turn those ideas into reality?
Then the CMS workshop "Writing Successful Grant Proposals" is for you!
As a follow-up to an introductory session on grant writing during the 2009 CMS National Conference, this half-day workshop will provide opportunity to pursue in greater depth ideas for grant proposals.
This workshop will summarize essential information:
- What are possible sources of funding for my idea?
- What is the difference between operating and project grants?
- How can I convincingly write my narrative description?
- How do I build a budget?
- What do I need to know about evaluation and assessment?
Representative(s) from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as from Minnesota state arts and humanities councils will provide an overview of grant opportunities for musicians. Workshop leaders Richard P. Benedum and Donald J. Polzella will then guide attendees through the "hands-on" development of an actual proposal. This will allow CMS members to see how an idea can be shaped, step-by-step, into a winning proposal.
