Hayes School of MusicThe faculty of Appalachian State University is proud to host the 40th Regional Conference of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of The College Music Society on our campus. ASU is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains of Western North Carolina. Our meeting will take place in the Broyhill Music Center, which is home for the Hayes School of Music. We look forward to seeing you in March and sharing new research, compositions, performances, and pedagogical ideas.

Keynote Address

"The Pa's Fiddle Project: Towards a Public Musicology"
Dale Cockrell

Dale CockrellDale Cockrell is Professor of Musicology in the Blair School of Music, Vanderbilt University. He is widely published in the field of American music studies, including Demons of Disorder: Early Blackface Minstrels and Their World (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1997), which won the C. Hugh Holman Award; Excelsior: Journals of the Hutchinson Family Singers, 1842-1846 (Stuyvesant, New York: Pendragon, 1989), recipient of the Irving Lowens Award; and more than one hundred other books, articles, and monographs. He is a former president of the Society for American Music and a member of the American Antiquarian Society. Cockrell has received three NEH Fellowships and other grants, awards, and honors. He has held appointments to Indiana University, the University of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa), Dartmouth College, Middlebury College, The College of William and Mary, and the University of Alabama.

Professor Cockrell's work of late has focused on The Pa's Fiddle Project, a program centered on the music embedded in the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. One result of the Project will be the publication of The Ingalls-Wilder Family Songbook in 2010 by the Music of the United States of America project. Cockrell established Pa's Fiddle Recordings in 2004 and has since released Happy Land: Musical Tributes to Laura Ingalls Wilder (2005; honored by the NEH by inclusion on its We the People Bookshelf), The Arkansas Traveler: Music from Little House on the Prairie (2007), and Pa's Fiddle: Charles Ingalls (1836-1902), American Fiddler will be released in 2010.

The 2010 chapter meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the College Music Society will be held at the Broyhill Music Center at the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.

Driving Directions

From the northeast via Interstate 81 and Interstate 77:

Take I-81 south to I-77, west of Radford, Va. Proceed south on I-77 into North Carolina. Exit onto Highway 421 North and travel approximately 60 miles to Boone. In Boone, turn left at light onto Hardin St. and then right onto Rivers St. at the next light. The Hayes School of Music in the Broyhill Music Center will be on the left.

From the south via Interstate 77:

Proceed north on I-77 through Charlotte and Statesville. Continue on I-77 North until you reach the I-77/HWY 421 interchange. Exit onto Highway 421 North and travel approximately 60 miles to Boone. In Boone, turn left at light onto Hardin St. and then right onto Rivers St. at the next light. The Hayes School of Music in the Broyhill Music Center will be on the left.

From the west via Interstate 40 (Asheville and/or Hickory):

In Asheville, take I-40 East to Highway 221 in Marion. Exit onto Highway 221 North and follow to Linville. In Linville, take Highway 105 North to Boone. In Boone, at the intersection of highways 105 & 321, turn left onto Highway 321 North. Follow to campus. -OR- When traveling on I-40 in the Hickory area, exit onto Highway 321 North and travel approximately 50 miles to Boone. Follow Highway 321 North to campus.

From the east via Interstate 40 and Interstate 85:

Proceed to Winston-Salem on I-40. Exit onto Highway 421 North in Winston-Salem and travel approximately 86 miles to Boone. In Boone, turn left at light onto Hardin St. and then right onto Rivers St. at the next light. The Hayes School of Music in the Broyhill Music Center will be on the left.
