The Department of Music of the Division of Performing, Digital and Media Arts at California State University Dominguez Hills is delighted to host the second annual Regional Conference of the Pacific Southwest Chapter of The College Music Society. We have a stimulating and eclectic day of recitals, presentations and research planned for you. California State University Dominguez Hills is conveniently located fifteen minutes south of Los Angles International Airport, and only five minutes from the 405, 110, and 91 Freeways. Keynote Address

Music of the Americas, a Personal Journey
Stephen Trinkle

Professor Trinkle will discuss his encounters with musicians, composers and conductors as well as performances in uniquely different venues. In addition He will discuss the positive and negative influences by various media on specific cultural identities.

Steven Trinkle has a very eclectic and cosmopolitan career. After graduating from Washburn University and Ithaca College he began working as a trumpeter in orchestras in the United States, Italy and Venezuela including the Houston Symphony, the Augusta Symphony, the Kansas City Philharmonic, the Shreveport Symphony, the Orchestra Sinfonica dalla Radiotelevisione Italiana and the Orquesta Sinfonica de Maracaibo.

He has been a professor at several universities and colleges including the State University of New York at Cortland, the University of South Carolina, Pembroke State University, Shenandoah University, Casper College and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a very diverse charge of classes: music appreciation, class strings, class brass, orchestration, choral arranging, theory, sight singing, orchestra, band, pep band, brass ensembles and studio trumpet. Many of his former students are playing professionally and teaching in colleges and public schools throughout the United States and South America.

As a conductor he has worked with a wide variety of ensembles including choirs, orchestras, music theatre, and university ensembles. His conducting teachers include Sam Jones, Don Portnoy, Kurt Muspratt, Paul Vermel and the many conductors with whom he has worked and observed for the past 40 years. Ensembles under his direction have toured the US, Switzerland, Italy and Brazil.

His own ensemble, Trinkle Brass Works, Inc., has received wide recognition through grants from the National Endowment for the Arts via Arts Midwest and Western States Arts Federation. Additionally grants from the Virginia Arts Council, North Carolina Arts Council, the Wisconsin Arts Board, the Wyoming Arts Council, Nevada Arts Council and many individuals and companies have funded hundreds of performances and Arts in Education residencies. TBW researches, commissions and performs music for brass and percussion.

Location

California State University Dominguez Hills is located within five minutes of the 91, 110 and 405 freeways, which makes travel to campus convenient no matter where you are coming from. Southern California's renowned warm temperatures and blue skies can be taken advantage of on campus or at beaches along the Pacific less than half an hour from campus. Conference events will take place in LaCorte Hall, which is immediately adjacent to parking lot 6.

From the Los Angeles Civic Center:
110 South - Follow the Harbor Freeway (110) to the Artesia Freeway (91) east to Avalon Blvd. Take Avalon Blvd. south to Victoria Street, turn left. The entrance to campus is a right turn at Tamcliff Avenue.

From Santa Monica:
10 East - Follow the Santa Monica Freeway (10) east to the San Diego Freeway (405) south toward Long Beach. Exit at the Vermont Avenue off-ramp. Turn left (east) at the end of the off-ramp onto 190th Street. Follow 190th Street east for approximately two miles to the campus (190th Street becomes Victoria Street). The campus entrance is a right turn at Tamcliff Avenue, the second traffic signal past Avalon Blvd.

From San Bernardino:
10 West - Follow the San Gabriel Freeway (605) south. Take the Artesia Freeway (91) west toward Redondo Beach. Take the Central Avenue exit and turn left; turn right onto Victoria Street. The campus entrance is a left turn at Tamcliff Avenue, a traffic signal.

From San Fernando Valley:
405 South - Follow the San Diego Freeway (405) south toward Long Beach. Exit on the Vermont Avenue off-ramp. Turn left (east) at the end of the off-ramp onto 190th Street. Follow 190th Street east for approximately two miles to the campus (190th Street becomes Victoria Street) The campus entrance is a right turn at Tamcliff Avenue, the second traffic signal past Avalon Blvd.

From San Diego:
405 North - Follow the San Diego Freeway (405) north toward Los Angeles to Avalon Blvd. (north) off-ramp. Take Avalon Blvd. north (right) to Victoria Street. Turn right (east) onto Victoria Street. The entrance to campus is a right turn at the next traffic signal, Tamcliff Avenue.
