Announcing The College Music Society's Inaugural CMS Summit

CMS Inaugural Summit - January 15-17, 2010

The College Music Society announces the inaugural CMS Summit, January 15-17, 2010 at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music in Nashville, Tennessee. This will be a joint Music Entrepreneurship conference with the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE).

CMS Summits are meant to explore deeply a specific issue in higher education music training. For this inaugural Summit, the focus is Entrepreneurship Education.

Unlike other Arts Entrepreneurship conferences, the Summit will explore Entrepreneurship Education from the perspective of those interested in developing their own programs. The Summit is designed to be highly interactive, with ample opportunity to explore ideas and questions with leaders in the field. All aspects of program development -- including philosophical structuring, communication strategies with students and faculty, funding, aesthetic traditions in music training, definitions of entrepreneurship, curriculum, and other important considerations -- will be discussed.

The Summit is designed for those who teach, will teach, or administer entrepreneurship in music units. Since entrepreneurship is taught by instructors in both music and business schools, the Summit will provide a forum for educators from both disciplines, focusing on the strengths and traditions of each discipline.

The Summit registration fees are: CMS members $100, Non-CMS members $175. USASBE members may register for $75 each day.

CMS members will have the opportunity to attend the USASBE conference on Friday, January 15, at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel and Resort for $75, thanks to a CMS scholarship. The USASBE Arts Entrepreneurship Interest Group will be hosting a number of scholarly papers and workshops that day. This will be a perfect opportunity to meet educators in both the music and entrepreneurship fields and a great introduction to entrepreneurship.

On Saturday and Sunday, January 16 and 17, 2010, the Summit will be held at the Blair School of Music. USASBE members are welcome to register and attend.

Who Should Attend? Any member of The College Music Society interested in entrepreneurship education is welcome and encouraged to attend the 2010 Summit.

The 2010 Summit is being organized by the CMS Committee on Career Development and Entrepreneurship will logistical support from the Society's Executive Office: Gary Beckman (University of South Carolina-Columbia), Chair; Diane Roscetti (California State University-Northridge), Douglas T. Owens (University of Southern Maine), Kevin Woelfel (University of Idaho), Nate Zeisler (Bowling Green State University); CMS Executive Office: Robby D. Gunstream, Executive Director.
