Submission Deadline: 12:00 noon EST on Monday, October 14, 2013.
The Northeast Chapter of The College Music Society is pleased to announce its Call for Program Participation for its Regional Conference on April 4-5, 2014, in Potsdam, NY, at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam.
The Program Committee welcomes proposals from diverse perspectives including any topic taught as an academic music course, discipline, or program within institutions of higher education. The Northeast Chapter is particularly interested in reviewing proposals on topics in ethnomusicology, the psychology of music, music therapy, and music entrepreneurship. The Chapter is also interested in providing a forum for music professionals from all educational settings including students, faculty, independent musicians, and retired educators.
A submitted proposal may be a paper, a lecture-recital, a recital without a lecture, a panel consisting of several discussants, or a poster. For this regional conference, the committee encourages performers to submit a recital item without a lecture of up to 12 minutes for inclusion in an hour-long recital including items from multiple proposers. This recital item may be solo or chamber music up to and including 5 performers (a piano as well as percussion instruments will be available). Discussions of performance-related challenges and solutions in a lecture-recital format are also accepted. The scheduled poster session will occur before the Friday evening Composers’ Concert, and posters will also be on display throughout the weekend.
In 2014, the common topic for all of the regional conferences is “Confluence: Music, Culture, and Community.” A separate forum session dedicated to this topic will occur during the conference. Proposers may also submit individual abstracts that address these concerns. Possible approaches may include how educators balance a performing career with teaching; promote culture and community within the confluence of diverse backgrounds of students; maintain their identity as an artist while excelling as a mentor, as an administrator, and/or as a colleague; and engage the surrounding and/or global communities through the culture of music.
Click here for a description of proposal formats. The descriptions provided are from the National Office. Please be advised that the committee is only able to accept papers, lecture-recitals, panels, and posters for this conference.
GUIDELINES
- Proposers must be members of The College Music Society. For those who are not current members of CMS, please allow three business days for the Executive Office to process membership applications. Please check your membership status before submitting a proposal.
- Priority will be given to members in the Northeast Chapter, but all CMS members are encouraged and invited to submit.
- Proposers must submit their own work and may not submit proposals on behalf of their students or others.
- Proposers may submit up to two proposals for the conference.
- All persons whose work is selected for inclusion on the program must register for the full conference.
- It is understood that participants are willing to present on any day of the conference should their proposals be accepted.
- Electronic submissions are required. Please do not mail proposals. Complete instructions will be found within the online proposal system.
- The proposer's name should not appear in the title, abstract or in any uploaded materials as submissions are evaluated anonymously. Any proposal that includes the name of the proposer is likely to receive an automatic rejection.

Submissions that do not conform to the above guidelines will not be considered.
NORTHEAST CHAPTER STUDENT PAPER COMPETITION
Student members of CMS who are selected to present their work at the conference are automatically considered for the Most Outstanding Paper Award. Students are invited to submit abstracts for papers, lecture-recitals, or recital hour items in any area of musical scholarship and should follow the procedures in the Call for Program Participation. The following guidelines apply to the competition:
- Entrants must be (as of March, 2014) enrolled in classes at their institution. Thus, undergraduates, masters, and pre-ABD doctoral students are eligible.
- Students should identify themselves as students at the end of the submitted abstract with the statement: "I am a student applying for the Most Outstanding Paper Award." Upon acceptance, this line will be removed from the abstract.
- Student submissions will be evaluated as part of the entire pool of submissions for programming at the conference.
- A cash award of $250 will be given to the winner.
- The judges reserve the right to not select a winner.
