- A performance of the winning pieces by internationally renowned trumpeters Vince DiMartino and Allen Vizzutti, accompanied by The University of Tennessee Wind Ensemble or Symphony Orchestra at the Joint Regional Conference of The College Music Society’s Southern Chapter, The College Music Society’s Mid-Atlantic Chapter, and the Association for Technology in Music Instruction February 13–15, 2014
- A recording of the performance
- It must be an original and new work: never before published, commercially recorded, and/or publicly performed.
- It should be approximately 8–12 minutes in duration.
- It must be written for solo trumpet and large ensemble (either wind ensemble or symphony orchestra); a limited amount of supplemental instruments is permissible, please email for further information.
- It should integrate jazz and classical music. “It should have a melody and should feature a balanced dialogue between the trumpet and ensemble.” – Doc Severinsen
- The contest is open to composers of all ages.
- Winning composers must attend the premiere performance in Knoxville, Tennessee
- There is no entry fee; but, composers must join The College Music Society (CMS) in order to submit scores; winning composers must be members of CMS at the time of the performance.
- Each composer may submit up to two scores.
- The contest uses a blind review process; composers must remove their names from their scores and from any uploaded pdf or mp3 file names.
- An electronic version of the score is required and a recording is strongly encouraged. Both must be submitted through the CMS website:

- recording format should be mp3.
- MIDI realizations acceptable if no live recording is available.

- August 1, 2013 by noon MDT: Deadline for submissions
- October 15, 2013: Notification of winners
- November 1, 2013: Scores and parts must be delivered to the University of Tennessee School of Music
- The final judging panel will include Doc Severinsen, Vince DiMartino, and Allen Vizzutti.
- Judges will select up to three winners; judges are not required to select either a second or a third place winner (i.e. 1—3 winners will be selected).
- All winners agree to provide all necessary performing materials (e.g. score, parts, special instrument(s), audio materials) by November 1, 2013.
- The first place winner agrees that in any future publication of the work, “First Place, The Doc Severinsen International Composition Contest,” will accompany the title of the work in the score.
- Composers will retain all rights to their works, but will grant the University a non- exclusive perpetual license to perform their winning work.
- Winning compositions may have further opportunity for publication.
