The Scholarship and Research component of the Symposium is a premier refereed publication of original scholarly and research articles in the field of music in higher education. We are interested in all forms of scholarship (teaching and learning, engagement, application, integration, and discovery)¹ that reflect the mission and priorities of the Society in all areas of music (composition, education, ethnomusicology, general studies, musicology, performance, and theory). We encourage submissions of scholarly papers that (a) concern music participants within and outside of the institutional settings, (b) examine the effectiveness of the teaching and learning process in preparation for all types of professional musicians as well as music audiences, (c) are interdisciplinary (i.e., articles that cross traditional boundaries between music areas), or (d) are transdisciplinary (i.e., articles that address topics of significance to broad segments of the membership).

Authors are encouraged to review the Guidelines for Authors and must submit an electronic copy of the paper via the members’ area of the website of The College Music Society. Submissions are welcome at any time during the year. Sound files, pictures, and movie files are encouraged when they contribute to readers’ understanding of the topic. The normal length of an article should be about 20 pages, double spacing, or 5,000 words. Any unusual length with a sound justification could be considered also. Authors are responsible for securing rights and permissions to use all submitted materials. Papers must conform to the latest version of one of the two style manuals: Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association or The Chicago Manual of Style. Authors should not mix styles within a manuscript. To ensure anonymity in the reviewing process, the paper and the abstract should contain no clues to the author’s identity or institutional affiliation. No portion of the paper should be submitted simultaneously to another publication venue.

The first author of each submission will normally be acknowledged by the Editor within two weeks. If submission guidelines are met, the paper will be sent for a round of blind review. Notification of the status of the submission should be sent to the first author within three months.
