Established in 1983, the Great Lakes regional chapter is an active, vibrant, and diverse
community including over 2,000 members from Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana,
Kentucky, Minnesota, Wisconsin, northeastern South Dakota, eastern North Dakota,
Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec.
Our annual conference includes paper presentations, lecture-recitals, performance of CMS composers' works, student papers and compositions, a keynote speaker, and the annual business meeting and luncheon. You will be notified when we issue a Call for Participation in the fall of each year, although one need not present a paper at the conference to attend. If you do choose to submit a proposal, all topics related to college music teaching are welcome.
As an advocate for honoring and fostering students’ work, the Great Lakes Chapter has a long tradition of presenting an annual award for the Outstanding Student Presentation. In addition, the conference schedule includes a student meeting to afford the space for all students to come together and discuss shared concerns and interests.
I encourage you to take advantage of the opportunities available for you to serve as an officer, a committee member, a representative of a particular population (students, retired members), a newsletter editor, or in any other capacity that might be of interest. I invite you to share your ideas about the chapter and look forward to hearing from you!
