It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to The College Music Society’s Mid-Atlantic Chapter. Established in 1970, the Mid-Atlantic Chapter is the oldest in the Society. Over 850 members are included in the chapter, whose boundaries encompass Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, and the District of Columbia.
Our annual Regional Conference includes paper presentations, lecture-recitals, CMS composers’ concerts, student papers and compositions, a keynote speaker, and an annual business meeting. Attending the conference in the Mid-Atlantic region is easily reached and affordable, and allows an opportunity to visit and learn with colleagues from all over the region. The 2014 conference will be a joint conference with the Southern Chapter at the University of Tennessee–Knoxville. More information will be posted here as it becomes available!
The Mid-Atlantic Chapter is extremely proud to support several collegiate student chapters in our region. The mission of the student chapter is to examine issues relating to the contemporary professional lives of student musicians and future educators. I hope that you will consider starting a student chapter at your home institution! Please contact me directly for more information.
As a graduate student in the late 1990’s, I distinctly remember my first experience at a regional CMS conference. I was highly impressionable, and the variety of research and performances presented instilled within me a desire to think differently about my own performances, teaching philosophies, and research. I continue to rely on my colleagues within the society to engage me in new ways of thinking about my profession. Some of the most influential and successful collaborations of my short career have come about due to connections I have made through The College Music Society. I am extremely proud to serve as the president of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter, and hope you will find a way to be heavily involved on both the regional and national level.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Snodgrass. Ph.D.
