Mary Luehrsen surveys the expectations of today's college, conservatory, and university music students and the realities of a "life in music." Luehrsen seeks to inspire deeper and richer collaborations between talent-nurturing institutions of higher education and the career-supporting fields of the creative industries.

Mary Luehrsen is director of public affairs and government relations with NAMM and Executive Director of the NAMM Foundation. A professional flutist for twenty years, a certified music educator with sixteen years of music teaching experience, she now oversees NAMM’s policy development at the federal level and government relations that affect music education. Her role with the NAMM Foundation focuses on support for music research, and philanthropic and public service programs. Luehrsen lead’s NAMM’s national effort to advance access to music education opportunities for all children through the SupportMusic Coalition, music research projects and a vast network of partnership organizations united to create access and opportunity for all children to learn and grow with music. Luehrsen spearheaded a collaboration with The College Music Society and the development of the GenerationNext program that hosts thousands of music faculty and students at the NAMM Show each year.
