Career Development

Mission of the Career Development Initiative

The Career Development Initiative helps CMS members create strategies for successful careers in music.

Focus of Work in the Career Development Initiative

The Career Development Initiative includes work in five areas:

  • Academic Careers
  • Careers Outside the Academy
  • Academic Leadership and Administration
  • Academic Citizenship
  • Music Entrepreneurship Education

Committees coordinate work in the above areas and provide focus to the concerns of all musicians for career entry, mentoring, and career advancement.

CMS provides:

  • resources for career development and advancement (e.g., information concerning resumes/curriculum vitae, cover letters, press-kits, grant-writing, project development, professional networking, and other career tools);
  • maintains and disseminates relevant information regarding career trends in the music field; and
  • sponsors workshops and mentoring opportunities concerning career issues and skill development essential to the professional lives of musicians.

The Music Vacancy List includes employment opportunities within music and higher education, as well as opportunities in allied professions. Access to the MVL is a benefit of membership in The College Music Society.  Institutions, organizations, businesses, and industry that wish to reach the single most highly trained and educated pool of potential music employees are welcome to list their employment opportunities and will find the MVL to be a valuable means of identifying potential candidates.
