About Scholarship and Research

The Scholarship and Research component of College Music Symposium is a premier refereed publication of original scholarly and research articles in the field of music in higher education. It serves as a vehicle for dissemination of the fruits of research and creative activities in music and college music teaching. Its content highlights all forms of scholarship (teaching and learning, engagement, application, integration, and discovery) and reflects the mission and priorities of the Society in all areas of music (composition, education, ethnomusicology, general studies, musicology, performance, and theory). Special symposia, in the form of collections of articles, focusing on specific topics may be developed if the need arises.

The Scholarship and Research component encourages submissions of scholarly papers that (a) engage music participants within and outside of the institutional settings, (b) examine the effectiveness of the teaching and learning process in preparation for all types of professional musicians as well as music audiences, (c) are interdisciplinary (i.e., articles that cross traditional boundaries between music areas), or (d) transdisciplinary (i.e., articles that address topics of significance to broad segments of the membership). The Editor of the Scholarship and Research component takes an active role in seeking high-quality contributions and encouraging officers and members of the Society to do likewise. All submissions will be blind reviewed by a panel of the Editorial Board. External reviewers may be solicited as needed.
