The College Music Society is governed by a Board of Directors which includes five officers (President, President-Elect or Immediate Past President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer) and eight Board Members representing the seven major music specialties (Composition, Ethnomusicology, Music Education, Music in General Studies, Music Theory, Musicology, Performance) and an At-Large member currently representing music business, music technology, and music therapy. The Board of Directors serves as trustee of the Society, construes the Bylaws, and determines the strategies and policies of the organization. Responsibility for the management and actions of the Society is vested in the Board of Directors.
The officers serve as an Executive Committee and are responsible for the operations of the Society. A Finance Committee provides oversight to the fiscal operations of the organization. A Nominations Committee manages the annual election of the Board of Directors by the Society's membership.
