Professor Brookhart's work provides a useful and gratifying window into the published writings that chronicle the teaching of music in American colleges and universities during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. After pointing out relevant information in “non-music” sources and “general” music sources, he classifies his findings by theme: The Role of Music in Higher Education: Philosophy, Objectives, Curricula, Degrees; Students: Characteristics and Qualifications; Faculty; Administration and Accreditation; and Histories and Historical Sketches of Individual Institutions. Undoubtedly many relevant sources have been published after the cut-off date for this respected reference work, but the literature identified in it will remain the foundation for future studies of this important subject.
