  • 2013 NYFA Mentoring Program for Immigrant Artists

New York Foundation for the Arts

The 2013 NYFA Mentoring Program pairs immigrant artists from all disciplines with artist mentors who provide one-on-one support for their mentee. From July - September 2013, mentors will provide their mentee with broader access to the New York cultural landscape by sharing ideas, advice, resources and experiences.

Mentors will guide their mentee in achieving one or more specific goals, such as composing an artist statement, researching potential venues for showing their work, or completing a grant application. The Mentoring Program provides an opportunity to connect with other immigrant artists through group meetings including professional development workshops, events and informal gatherings.

This year we are pleased to announce that past alumni of the Mentoring Program will serve as Mentors. Their experience through previous participation in the program will inform their interaction and commitment to their mentee. Additionally, many of the mentors are immigrant artists who understand the challenges of sustaining one's art practice while navigating different cultural perspectives in the contemporary art world. Our mentors include artists from Europe, Asia, Central and South America.

Now in its 7th cycle after six years of success and growth, the Mentoring program has paired 101 mentees with 97 mentors. Each cycle proved to be an invaluable experience for mentees and mentors alike and artists often remain connected well beyond the program.

  • British Composer Awards 2013 - Nominations Open

    BritCompAward

Last year was our 10th anniversary which we celebrated with an outstanding Awards event at Goldsmith’s Hall in the City of London, followed two days later by a unique concert at the Purcell Room on London’s Southbank when works by 11 British Composer Award winners were performed by Endymion and the Vasari Singers.

Now in our eleventh year, we are delighted to be returning to Goldsmith’s Hall on Tuesday 3rd December and to confirm that a programme about the 11th British Composer Awards will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on Sunday 8th December.

The British Composer Awards have become an icon of the composing community and create an annual focus for those engaged in contemporary music –

The British Composer Awards are something really valuable in the world of contemporary music because they embrace the new in its widest sense, often offering up interesting surprises.” Joe Cutler

They also bring together the worlds of composing and commissioning under a shared spotlight –

The British Composer Awards is a very encouraging event for people who commission new music.” Judith Bingham

Importantly, they are recognised for the fact that the winning works are decided by panels constituted largely of composers –

Like many composers, I suspect, I place the greatest value on the respect of my fellow musicians.” Anthony Payne

The process begins with you – the nominator – and we rely on all of you to bring to our attention the work from the qualifying period of April 1st 2012 to March 31st 2013 that has excited you and which you believe bears the hallmarks of excellence which a British Composer Award recognises and represents.

You will find everything you need to make a nomination attached to this message or by going to our website, http://www.britishcomposerawards.com. We are adding content to the website all the time, so do come back and visit often. Please also take careful note of the nomination Rules and Regulations as these are updated year on year. The closing date for nominations is Thursday 11th July 2013.

Together with our sponsors, PRS for Music and our media partners, BBC Radio 3, providing exclusive broadcast coverage of the Awards, we hope that you will once again participate with us in celebrating great contemporary classical and jazz music and spread the word to encourage others to send in nominations.
