Dear pianists and piano lovers,
As president of the American Matthay Association, I enthusiastically invite you, your colleagues, and your students to take part in our upcoming 2026 Matthay Festival. This year's festival will be held on the campus of Boise State University in Boise, ID from May 20-23, 2026.
The American Matthay Association is an organization centered around the teachings and legacy of the important British piano pedagogue Tobias Matthay. Our yearly festival is designed to offer participants direct and concentrated access to his pedagogy amongst other current scholarship. Our festival theme this year is Bridging Past & Future: 20th-century Pedagogy for 21st-century Students. We center our discussion this year on Matthay's approach in dialogue with other historical pedagogies, with an emphasis on how these historic approaches can still help students today. In so doing, we hope to balance tradition with innovation, and to preserve and pass along the pianistic wisdom of bygone centuries. We are thrilled to present guest speaker Robert Hamilton, author of the book Artistry: Pursuing the Mysteries of Music Performance. Excellent performances are always featured at our festivals, and this year we are excited to host piano recitals by Stephen Beus (Brigham Young University), Lindsay Garritson (University of Central Florida), and an evening of chamber music with Barton Moreau (Boise State University).
Daytime sessions will feature a broad spectrum of topics that will be of great value to those interested in piano performance and piano pedagogy. Our presenters this year represent several countries and bring with them their unique skill sets and scholarly focus.
