CMS Board Member for Music in General Studies
This year’s focus was, once again, the changing role of music curricula in the 21st century and directions departments and programs have considered that will engage millennial students. Discussion centered on the inclusion (or not) of topics in popular music and world cultures in classes formerly known as “music appreciation” courses. With so many curricular models and a never-ending supply of introduction to music books, the instructor in music in general studies is at once blessed and cursed with choices.
A highlight of the year was the pre-conference workshop in Cambridge, MA, organized by Bill Everett, which focused on developing the artist-citizen. The panelists were fabulous and the discussion that ensued brought to light many issues relevant to music in general studies.
