The Professional Development Committee considered the value and need for ongoing pre-conference workshops prior to the CMS National Conference. In March and April, we engaged in an online discussion concerning how we might develop a wide variety of pre-conference workshops. We brainstormed about what kinds of topics might be new and innovative for CMS members
We have reviewed the proposal guidelines and found no need for revisions or changes. We solidified a list of topics for possible pre-conference workshops and decided to compile them into a short survey for CMS members. We polled CMS members in September to help us shape a Call for Proposals for Preconference Workshops. Based on the results of the recent survey, the Professional Development Committee encourages proposals on one of the following top three topics for preconference workshops:
- Collaborating across the music disciplines
- Career options beyond the academy
- Music entrepreneurship
The due date for proposals is Tuesday, January 31, 2017.
On October 16, 2015, the Committee met online via video conference to review two strong proposals for summer 2016 workshops. The first, “The Savvy Musician,” was unanimously approved for CMS endorsement. It will take place June 7-12, 2016, in Columbia, SC.
The second, a detailed proposal titled “CMS Music Technology Retreat.” The committee voted to approve the workshop pending minor changes. The workshop is set for July 11-14, 2016, at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, Massachusetts.
