Presenter: Dr. Julie Jaffee Nagel (Psychologist, Musician, Author - Ann Arbor, Michigan)

What does mental health have to do with the music curriculum in higher education? This question raises important issues which are the focus of this webinar. Some of these background questions include: Why do students choose to study music professionally? What are ways to instill both a sense of music history/performance practice and the world into which they will graduate? Why is the study and performance of music valuable in students’ emotional and artistic repertoire? How can professors be attuned to teaching and graduating emotionally healthy and productive musicians in our financially, politically unstable society, era of terror, and age of anxiety?

This webinar specifically examines the necessity of addressing mental health in the music curriculum and proposes that courses in mental health must be essential instruments in the student’s and teacher’s emotional and artistic repertoire in the 21stCentury. Guidelines are provided that emphasize that, more than ever, the topic of mental health is relevant to promote enduring and endearing values to each emotionally healthy student and graduate. What does mental health have to do with the music curriculum in higher education? Everything!
