American Keepsake, Book or Collectible? Parlor Song Compilations & the Women Who Owned Them

American Keepsake, Book or Collectible? Parlor Song Compilations & the Women Who Owned Them

Presenter: Dr. Petra Meyer-Frazier (University of Denver) and Dr. Michael J. Budds (University of Missouri - Columbia)

This webinar looks at issues that arose in Meyer-Frazier’s recent book Bound Music, Unbound Women. Specifically, questions are asked and answered around the type and age of women who collected and bound their personal sheet music as well as the type of scholarship needed for this book, specifically around biographical vs. synthetic scholarship. Within the book contrasts clearly emerge around regionality, personality, and purpose, all of which created entanglements throughout the process. The session concludes with a discussion of implications for future research and projects.
