Music Curricula for the 21st Century: Guiding Principles

Music Curricula for the 21st Century: Guiding Principles

Presenter:  Dr. Robin Moore (University of Texas - Austin)

Dr. Moore's work adds to recent initiatives calling for substantive changes to applied music study in conservatories and music schools. It suggests new priorities for degree programs over and above the acquisition of repertoire knowledge and skill on a particular instrument. These include: greater commitment to local/regional engagement; the teaching of technological or other practical skills that serve the interests of aspiring performers; a commitment to global musical awareness; a commitment to social justice through the arts; and greater emphasis on creative, student-driven classroom projects and research.
