Webinar: Coping with Alternative Teaching Strategies—a Focus on Ensembles

Included here is The College Music Society's second webinar on coping with alternative teaching strategies in higher education for music, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We focus this time on performance ensembles—experiences in the past few weeks, lessons learned, and thoughts about future uses of technology.

Moderated by CMS executive director Bill Pelto and CMS president-elect Mark Rabideau, the webinar features presentations by and discussion among five colleagues—Dominick DiOrio (associate professor of choral conducting, Indiana University), Aaron Flagg (director of jazz studies, Juilliard Conservatory), Kiki Kilburn (interim director of orchestras, Cornell University), Rebecca Phillips (director of bands, Colorado State University), and Shelbie Rassler (Boston Conservatory student, producer of the “virtual orchestra” performance of “What the World Needs Now”). Panelists share their experience regarding online learning platforms and alternative teaching strategies for ensembles during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic.

No one can or should be expected to become an overnight expert in online teaching and learning, so discussion—including attendees’ Q&A—focuses on supporting colleagues' efforts while sharing practical and realistic solutions.
