Workshop—A Focus on Inclusive Pedagogy: Creating Course Content and Activities that Acknowledge the Cultural Capital of Our Students in the Music Education Classroom

March 13, 2022.
Presented by Suzanne Hall, Temple University, and Leila Ramagopal Pertl, Lawrence University.

The most powerful resources for curricular content are the students in your music classroom; their histories, ideas, and experiences. At the heart of inclusive pedagogy is the co-created learning space where teachers and students collaborate to uphold every person’s right to be a valuable contributor to this new community.

In this joyful, interactive workshop, Professors Suzanne Hall and Leila Ramagopal Pertl, will present approaches to engaging students that draw upon the cultural and musical capital they bring to the music education classroom. They will briefly touch on inclusive educational theories and practices that propound the idea of students as active participants and contributors of new knowledge. Attendees will participate in student-centered activities that can be replicated in any music classroom setting and will be provided tools to share with pre-service teachers to increase the level of engagement with their future students.
