Dr. Natvig, Professor of Music, Bowling Green State University and Dr. J. P. Oehrtman, Licensed Professional School Counselor school counselor educator in the School of Counseling and Special Education at Bowling Green State University

“Music Students and Mental Health: Awareness, Issues and Helping Strategies” - will focus on common mental health issues among college music students, why they might be reluctant to seek counseling, and which common helping strategies might be difficult for music students to undertake. We will address the signs and issues that faculty should be aware of and how they can facilitate and support good mental health practices in their studios and classrooms.

Dr. Mary Natvig is a Professor of Music at the College of Musical Arts at Bowling Green State University where she has also served as the college’s Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies. Mary holds the PhD in musicology from the Eastman School of Music with a minor in music theory. Her main areas of research are: 1) Renaissance music, 2) music in Progressive Era Toledo, Ohio, and 3) music history pedagogy, a field she helped to establish in the early 1990s. She directed the Early Music Ensemble at BGSU for 21 years and previously taught violin/viola at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. She now teaches violin at the Black Swamp Fine Arts School in Bowling Green. Mary is currently pursuing a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at BGSU.

Dr. J.P. Oehrtman is a licensed professional school counselor and an Assistant Professor and school counselor educator in the School of Counseling and Special Education at Bowling Green State University located in Bowling Green, Ohio. J.P. graduated with his Ph.D. in counselor education from The Ohio State University (OSU) in 2018. He has co-authored several peer-reviewed journal articles and has numerous National and State presentations. Prior to coming to BGSU, J.P. has over 20 years in K-12 education both as a school counselor and educator and has worked with students from all levels. Dr. Oehrtman’s primary research interests focus on school counselors’ collaboration within schools, school counselor supervision, and evidence-based data driven school counseling practices.
