Are CMS members concerned with engagement with and outreach to the public?

Yes. Musicians, by nature, are continually concerned with public service in support of the art of music. All do, indeed, care if you listen. CMS has established committees that develop liaison and manage engagement withand outreach to a variety of communities.

Isn't engagement with the public a complex topic that requires considerable time, energy, and focus, as well as its own pedagogy?

Yes. In spite of its complexity, CMS and its members are dedicated to this vitally important work.

What are the current areas of CMS engagement and outreach?

CMS has appointed committees to bring focus to the following areas:

  • community engagement
  • engagement with higher education 
  • engagement with the music business and industry
  • engagement with international communities
  • strategic partnerships with stakeholder organizations and groups with common goals

The College Music Society serves music in higher education by promoting music teaching and learning, musical creativity and expression, research, diversity of perspective, and interdisciplinary cooperation. As an extension of the Society, The CMS Fund enhances American life through support of exemplary and innovative projects of the Society's members that bring to the wider public the accomplishments of the music profession in higher education.
