The College Music Society (CMS) is pleased to announce its next International Conference in the Baltic countries of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The conference will take place from July 2-10, 2023, with events in Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn. The program will include presentations of papers and recitals, performances of compositions by CMS composers, collaboration and performances with Baltic scholars, as well as cultural events and guided sightseeing. The conference will provide a balance between great scholarship and connecting attendees to the music and cultures of the conference locations to help deepen participants' awareness and understanding of their surroundings.
The conference will begin in Vilnius, Lithuania. Vilnius is known for its varieties of architecture and quaint small cobblestone streets. There will be opportunities to taste some of the traditional Lithuanian foods and experience traditional folk dance as well as learn about the national composer and visual artist, M.K. Čiurlionis.
Next, we will travel as a group to Latvia. Riga is known for outstanding Art Nouveau architecture and a charming Old Town with the beautiful Riga Dom cathedral as well as numerous other churches. The Latvian National Song and Dance Festival (Dziesmu svētki) will fill the streets with musicians and Latvians in folk costumes along with wonderful food and beer gardens all around the area.
Estonia’s capital city, Tallinn is known for its perfectly-preserved medieval Old Town. In addition to conferencing in the city, the group will spend time at the Arvo Pärt Center in Laulasmaa—a peninsula with magnificent natural surroundings—in a pine forest near the sea. During free time, an option to take a tour of the Estonia Piano Factory can be arranged or some may wish to explore the nearby areas of Telleskivi and Kalamaja.
