Sixty-Sixth National Conference (2023)

Welcome to Miami, Florida!

I am excited to welcome you to the 66th National Conference of the College Music Society at the Miami Marriott Dadeland in Miami, Florida, October 26–28, 2023, held in collaboration with the 2023 National Conference of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction (ATMI). 

Miami is known as "The Sunshine City" because of its excellent weather. The Metrorail can conveniently take you to the University of Miami, The Kampong, The National Tropical Botanical Garden, the Vizcaya Museum & Gardens, and the Miami downtown; all of which will allow you to experience the cultural diversity of the city.

This 2023 CMS National Conference will be exciting, invigorating, and engaging. Many highly creative submissions were selected based on the theme "The World Becomes What We Teach: Innovative, Inclusive, Empathetic, and Joyful." Our commitment to leading change is revolutionizing conversations across music in higher education about how we might better prepare musicians for the challenges and opportunities faced when living, learning, teaching, and performing music amidst a rapidly evolving globalized society.

This year's program features three showcase concerts, and the first showcase concert will be performed at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. We have over two-hundred performances, research presentations, panels, workshops, demonstrations, and e-posters on various topics and genres. I am excited and looking forward to attending as many sessions as possible to listen and learn about the many different approaches to music to be presented. 

New to the program this year are:

1. Asynchronous Virtual Presentations
2. Roundtable Think Tank discussions: CMS members can participate in thinking, ask questions, and brainstorm current issues in higher education; 1) Innovative: Repositioning Creativity at the Center of Music Education; 2) Empathetic: Radically Responsive Music Schools: Building a Culture of Change; 3) Joyful: Community-Engaged Music Making. 
3. Scores for Pre-formed Ensembles: Florida State University Winds, Hippocrene Saxophone Quartet, and Composite Brass Duo will perform the selected scores. 
4. Student Compositions for Pre-formed Student Ensemble: Florida State University Student Saxophone Quartet will perform the selected scores. 
5. Collaboration with University of Miami Frost School of Music to perform Jazz entertainment with students and faculty. 

The conference will also feature four inspiring and thought-provoking plenary sessions:

1. The Welcome Breakfast and Opening Plenary (Thursday, 8-9 am) with Gretchen Amussen. She is a consultant and an experienced leader in the international, cultural, and educational areas. She contributed to transforming Paris Conservatory and European Conservatories in many ways and facilitated multilateral cultural and bias projects worldwide. 
2. The ATMI Music Technology Lecture (Friday, 11-noon): The Honourable Elizabeth A. Baker is an independent artist. Elizabeth is a new renaissance artist whose work embraces a constant stream of change and rebirth in practice.
3. The Robert M. Trotter Lecture (Saturday, 10:15-11:15 am) with Omar Thomas. He is an American award-winning composer, arranger, and educator who teaches at the University of Texas at Austin. He was awarded the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award in 2008 and invited by the ASCAP Association to perform his music in their highly exclusive JaZzCap Showcase, held in New York City. 2012 Omar was named the Boston Music Award's "Jazz Artist of the Year." In 2019, he was awarded the National Bandmasters Association/Revelli Award, becoming the first Black composer awarded the honor in the contest's 42-year history. 
4. The Closing Plenary and Reception (Saturday, 5-7 pm): Gabriel Alegria’s Afro-Peruvian Sextet has been entertaining and educating their audience with inventive programs of traditional Afro-Peruvian music transformed by Gabriel Alegria's synthesis of folkloric Afro-Peruvian rhythm, jazz, and other musical strains. 

I look forward to seeing you at the joint CMS-ATMI conference in Miami. This is one of the very few annual conferences that brings all segments of music programs in higher education together to have meaningful conversations for the future of our music. OVERVIEW

The College Music Society will hold its 66th National Conference at the Miami Marriott Dadeland in Miami, Florida, October 26–28, 2023, in conjunction with the 2023 National Conference of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction (ATMI).

CMS National Conferences routinely attract over 350 faculty, administrators, graduate students,independent scholars, composers, publishers, and music business personnel who share a commoninterest and dedication to the improvement of music and its relationship to the other academicdisciplines of higher education.

The conference program presents higher education's broadest array of topics surrounding the philosophy and practice of music as anintegral part of higher education.Through research papers,demonstrations, performances, lecture-recitals, panels, posters, and workshops, CMS conferences provide the opportunity to share insights and perspectives on teaching, to experience new and regional musics, and to consider future directions for the art of music.
