Sixty-First National Conference (2018)
Welcome from the Program Chair
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 2018 CMS National Conference in beautiful Vancouver, Canada in celebration of the work we all do in music. The land on which we gather is the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples including the territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. We invite you to discover the rich cultural environment as well as the stunning vistas of the Canadian Rockies and Pacific Ocean as we explore our conference theme of diversity and inclusion.
The 2018 CMS National Program Committee has worked enthusiastically with the CMS leadership to build an engaging program that reflects the range of creative work and inspiring dynamism of our professional community. We encourage you to discover new music by composers from the Pacific Northwest, across the world and from our host country Canada. Experience the breadth of performances, panels, research papers and workshops. We invite you to engage in provocative discussions and probe into the issues facing our profession. Be inspired by our outstanding keynote speakers who are innovative leaders at the forefront of their fields.
The interactive performance of 10,000 Birds by John Luther Adams on Friday night will engage performers from across the continent and create a powerful experience for all attendees. We welcome everyone to participate in Thursday’s late-night Jazz Jam for spontaneous music making. Our commitment to students and young professionals is paramount this year. We extend a special welcome to all the students and new CMS members attending a national conference for the first time. We have worked closely with our partners ATMI and NACWPI to create a more integrated experience for all in attendance.
It has been a privilege to serve as the Program chair and work with dedicated colleagues on all the committees, and with the staff and leadership of CMS. A special thank-you to the members of the National Program Committee Brian Cobb, Melissa Hoag, Roger Mantie, Matt Shevitz, and Jennifer Snodgrass who were a highly engaged and collaborative group. The support of CMS Executive Director Bill Pelto and the CMS Board, with President Keith Ward, empowered our work. Thank you to Peter Park who worked tirelessly to support the entire process.
We hope that you will find the conference program valuable and rewarding. Our meeting in Vancouver serves to celebrate the diverse work of our professional community, strengthen our networks and inspire innovation for CMS as we imagine an exciting and meaningful future.
