The Eileen M. Hayes Fund for Equity and Opportunity is established in recognition of the leadership and professional commitments of ethnomusicologist and past CMS President, Eileen M. Hayes, the first African American and second woman of color to hold that office. In her varied roles in CMS, her pioneering leadership roles across colleague music societies, and her work as a division and department chair, researcher, university dean, book series editor, and faculty mentor, Hayes has embodied qualities of the quintessential scholar and academic leader. Her advocacy for equity and anti-racist initiatives in music has prompted profound change within the profession. The breadth and timeliness of her leadership continue to be an inspiration for music scholars, performers, and educators in academia. With initial contributions for the Fund totaling over $13,000 from Dr. Hayes’s closest students, friends, and colleagues, CMS and the CMS Fund plan for the Hayes Fund to grow significantly over the next years, through additional contributions, ensuring significant impact within the academic musical community.
Purpose: To recognize exceptional commitments to equity and inclusion in music in higher education. Awards will be distributed in the amount of $500-$1000 per recipient, and may be applied toward travel to CMS conferences, honoraria for guest performers, subvention grants for first books and collaborative efforts that reflect the engagement of more than one music sub-discipline, etc. Preference will be given to proposals submitted by contingent faculty and early-career scholars of color.
Administration: The Eileen M. Hayes Award for Equity and Opportunity will be administered by the CMS Fund under the direction of the CMS Fund President.
