The College Music Society-International Chapter of CMS was established in 2023 to create new pathways for expanding cross-cultural dialogue and exchange among those seeking to engage with music in diverse regional, national, and global contexts. Formally convened with its Board and Advisory Committee in 2024, the Chapter builds on more than three decades of CMS’s international conferences and activities, providing a dedicated forum for shaping the Society’s global engagement in the 21st century.
The CMS International Chapter extends the forums and services historically offered by CMS through initiatives specifically designed to foster international connections. These initiatives center on community engagement, professional growth, and collaborative projects that highlight the power of music to foster international understanding and global cooperation.
Its mission is to:
- Expand and deepen CMS’s global presence through sustained international initiatives.
- Explore innovative and inclusive forms of global engagement across music, research, practice, and education.
- Encourage interdisciplinary approaches to the development of our work in both national and international contexts.
- Establish programs that support professional growth across career stages, ensuring that new scholars and graduate students, as well as longstanding members, can contribute meaningfully to CMS’s evolving global mission and projects.
Through this mission, the CMS International Chapter affirms CMS’s identity as a truly global professional society—one that empowers its members to strengthen and build pathways of engagement across diverse national and international contexts, enriching CMS’s international presence and supporting vibrant musical communities worldwide.
