There has been much important work in recent years to redefine what we teach in music theory courses and to address how the content and delivery method of our curriculum connect to broader social structures. In this presentation, Paula Maust, Assistant Professor of Music Theory at Peabody, will discuss her book, ‘Expanding the Music Theory Canon’ (SUNY Press), which offers a framework for integrating common-practice-era music by underrepresented groups into the theory curriculum. She will demonstrate some of the supporting workbook activities in Auralia & Musition. Tim Wilson, Head of Education with Auralia & Musition, will address strategies for engaging students through popular music. He will discuss the challenges of meeting the real-world needs of students and present pathways for supporting learners with non-notation and notation-based backgrounds. This presentation will provide insights and strategies for anyone interested in making their music theory courses more relevant, engaging, and inclusive.
