CMS Interdisciplinary Roundtables

CMS Interdisciplinary Roundtables

The CMS Council on Music Education and Council on Musicology invite you to attend three virtual interdisciplinary roundtables (on June 19, July 17, August 14) to evaluate, discuss and imagine a culturally responsive, relevant 21st century curricula, one that reflects evolving student needs, professional expectations, and industry transformation, including rapid development in technology and AI.

The specific focus of this initiative will be music teacher education, framed as a response to the ongoing national teacher shortage. While music education majors receive direct pedagogical training within their designated music education coursework, their preparation extends far beyond that sequence. Students learn how to teach history, theory, composition, performance (through ensembles and lessons), and other musical areas from faculty across the entire School of Music.

Roundtable 1: Friday, June 19 | 12:00-1:30PM ET

Guiding Question: What innovative or responsive changes to student needs and professional outcomes has your discipline implemented?

This roundtable will showcase curricula design and program changes shared by colleagues in a lively lightning-talk format followed by engaging discussions.

Roundtable 2 : Friday, July 17 | 12:00 – 1:30PM ET

Guiding Question: What would a truly responsive curriculum look like in higher education music institutions broadly?

This second session will build upon the first, offering a space where participants can explore the exciting possibilities of a responsive curriculum for the profession as a whole.

Roundtable 3: Friday, August 14 | 12:00 – 1:30PM ET

Action Item: Drafting curricular models that will be adaptable to diverse institutional needs and student populations

We invite you to join us for this engaging working roundtable, where you can envision and shape meaningful change within your community. Are you interested in making a change at your institution based on the topics discussed in the roundtables?

Join us as we envision the future of music in higher education.

The roundtables are intended to be iterative in nature, therefore we encourage participants to attend all three, if possible.
