From its initial conception in 1998, The CMS Fund has been serving music in higher education. This was manifest in The CMS Fund's sponsoring CMS Beyond Fifty, The College Music Society's first fund-raising campaign. Launched during the 50th anniversary of the Society, the campaign provided the resources necessary to support innovative approaches to engagement and outreach (1) on campus and off campus and (2) within undergraduate and graduate curricula. At the end of the campaign on December 31, 2011, gifts totaled over $134,000, surpassing our $100,000 goal by 34%. As a result, The CMS Fund has fostered effective and original approaches to curricula, pedagogy, and audience development to strengthen the place of music in our culture. The Fund continues to address the challenges facing the profession by bringing the accomplishments of its members and their institutions to a wider public. In today's society, musicians—whether composers, performers, educators, or scholars—must possess the skills necessary to interact and communicate with the general public to influence more effectively musical life in contemporary society. Support through the funds raised in the campaign, including Awards, grants, and other initiatives from The CMS Fund support this endeavor. The Board of Directors of The CMS Fund encourages all to contribute and make possible these important engagement programs.
