Welcome to the Southern Chapter

douglas markWelcome to the CMS Southern Chapter!

It is with great pleasure that I extend a warm welcome to the Southern Chapter. Our chapter’s membership includes music educators, researchers, composers, performers, students, and music enthusiasts from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Puerto Rico, Tennessee, and the US Virgin Islands.

Our annual conferences feature a broad range of lecture recitals, papers, performances, workshops, and posters from our expansive membership, as well as participants from around the country. I am inspired by the diverse talents and perspectives each of you brings. Our chapter is dedicated to fostering a vibrant environment where we can explore new ideas, share our passions, and support one another in our musical journeys.

This chapter has long been a beacon of musical excellence and intellectual curiosity, and we continue to build upon this rich tradition. Our shared commitment to advancing the field of music and fostering a supportive environment for all those involved in music education, performance, compositions, and research is what makes this community so special.

Whether you are here to present your research, share your passion for performance, or learn from your colleagues, I encourage each of you to engage fully and continue to build meaningful connections within this diverse and dynamic group. Together, we can explore new ideas, celebrate the art of music, and enrich the lives of our students and the broader community.

Each year we offer two student awards at our regional conference: the David Camp Student Composition Award and the David C. Kushner Student Paper Award. Please encourage your students to submit their work for consideration!

Thank you for being part of this wonderful chapter, and I look forward to seeing you at a future chapter gathering!

Please feel free to contact me if you would like more information about our chapter or if you would like to be involved in chapter leadership.

Kind regards,
Douglas L. Mark
